Trustees

What is a Charity Trustee?

All registered charities in the UK must have a Board of Trustees. These are appointed individuals who form a team responsible for overseeing the charity’s aims and objectives. Trustees play a crucial role in ensuring that the charity operates effectively, stays true to its mission, and complies with legal requirements.

By law, trustees must be volunteers. This ensures they are not influenced by financial gain and act solely in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries. Their role requires integrity, accountability, and a commitment to good governance.

What Do They Do?

Meet Regularly

The board meets at minimum three times a year, to be updated on the charities recent activities.

Assess Finances

The board reviews the organisations finances and works alongside specialised accountants to submit financial reports annually to the charity commission.

Acts in the Charities Best Interests

Ensures the paid staff of the organisation are carrying out the charity aims and objectives for the good of the beneficiaries.

Trustees can handle requests from beneficiaries and other organisations, as well as address complaints. However, these should be directed to the charity’s staff first. Since trustees meet irregularly, staff members may be able to respond to your request more quickly and escalate this to the board later if appropriate.
